I've had a completely different post planned for today, but boy can things change fast :D Today I am here with one of the very rare personal posts. I'm not sure how you'll interpret this, but I am not trying to be superficial or brag about being skinny, so please don't judge :D Some of you may know that I've decided to challenge myself this year. I wrote a post at the beginning of the year on all my goals for this year.
One of my goals was to start working out at least 2 times a week consistently. That has always been my problem... Especially the 'consistant' part. However, I decided that it was time.
To give you a little bit of background. Ever since I was a child, I have been super skinny. And when I say super skinny, I mean almost as if I had an eating disorder skinny. I mostly didn't eat enough (I ate until I was full, I didn't starve myself by any means) and there were many foods I didn't even want to try, because I didn't like them. I was virtually so thin that I was transparrent!
When I reached puberty, I realized that it was really hard for me to gain weight (yes, I do realize that some of you may think that it's not so bad, but trust me, it was). Anyways, at first, my goal was to reach 40 kg and when I did it, I think my mom was even happier than me. Next goal was 45, and then 50. Now, to give you a little bit of a time frame... Each goal took years, and I mean literally years, as in at least 4, to reach.
Meanwhile, I did play tennis, I took Zumba classes, pilates, aerobics, I roller skate occasionally, but none of these are on a weekly basis, and especially not two times a week.
Fast forward to today. I am now around 52 kg and am 170 cm tall. That's still super skinny, but I am actually fairly happy with my body. My legs are still super thin, but overall, I am the happiest with my body than ever. However, lately, I noticed that I was getting a bit of a muffin top :D My stomach area, as well as my upper thighs, my hips and my butt became kind of my problem areas. And no, I do not think I'm fat.
Seeing all of these changes is completely new to me. Then, when I noticed some celulite on my thighs last summer, it was a red alert for me. That is the proof right there, that skinny people can have cellulite! I started eating a lot more fruits and vegetables (which I really didn't before that), and I started 'working out'. Why 'working out'? Well, I'd play volleyball every once in a while, I'd play tennis once a month, I'd roller skate occasionally, but I never really made a commitment. That is why I decided it had to change this year.
Fast forward to about a month ago. I decided I was going to work out at least twice a week. And I really made up my mind. Guess what happened? I did Zumba on Monday and then I did absolutely nothing for the next month. And now fast forward to yesterday.
I decided I was going to do Insanity workout. And yes, it's absolutely insane and the other part of the title, Asylum, should have stopped me, but I did it anyways (I did do it a few years ago for two weeks, but I guess I forgot how awful it was). I decided to do it, not every day like the calendar says, but 2 days a week, following the calendar. Needless to say I thought I was going to die. I had to open a window at one point, I kept sitting down, I felt dizzy... And I decided I couldn't do it. So, I contacted one of my friends and asked her if she could make a program for me, because I simply couldn't do it.
I will have the program soon, and I will start following it. But here is what the main part and the main question of this post is. I am terribly afraid that I am going to do the same thing and simply quit, like with everything else workout related.
So, I would like to ask you... What do you do to motivate yourself? Do you have rewards for yourself? What kind of rewards are they? How do you stay focused and get up when you feel like laying down and watching tv, while eating the best chocolate you've ever tasted?

Do you have any tips and tricks regarding the workout itself, maybe even diet?
I would really appreciate it if you shared your experience and your tips and tricks with me!

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI used to be super skinny for years too. I don't think people actually realise what an issue it can be. I really wanted to put weight on and it just wouldn't happen. I then had an accident and my back got very bad. So I had steroid injections for my pain. That is when I gained weight. I am now trying to loose it. So have experienced both sides. I find that to loose weight is easier. However I now to do put it on super fast.
I think if you see your exercise as part of your life and routine that will motivate you. Like we brush our teeth daily why not exercise x

I agree that people don't understand it... I am so sorry that you've had such a terrible accident... Thank you for your advice
DeleteI am on a skinny side myself and it can be hard sometimes for others to understand our, skinny people, situation. One part of them are always saying how jealous they are and other part are judging you thinking that you starving yourself. But we have to accept who we are and just ignore all those who don't appreciate us for us.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking about motivation, I agree with that Shanel up there said, you need to make it a routine if you are in seriously. I suggest setting a time when you do workout, your body needs to be ready for it. Say, 7 p.m. every day. Everyday at around 7 p.m. your body will know what is coming and your mind won't protest. Also, little breaks are good to. Have a day off to let your body relax a bit. And setting little rewards is a good idea too :)

Thank you for your advice :) Setting a time is not really an option, because of my messy schedule at uni, but I definitely will work on that :) xx
DeleteI like doing zumba at the gym , its fun and you dont kill yourself like in insanity lol
ReplyDeletei also cut out most carbs from my diet but not all :)

I enjoy Zumba! However, I decided it was absolutely unnecessary to spend money on classes, when I can just workout at home... Boy, was I wrong :D
DeleteStart easy! If you have never worked out, starting with "Insanity" is just that, insane. It would be like deciding to start with running a marathon.
ReplyDeleteStart walking twice a week, biking, maybe yoga or anything similar, not to exhausting, but in an intensity that makes you feel like you did achieve your goal to work out without fear of dropping dead.
Annonce you have established that for three months change up the intensity, the classes, whatever is most fun.
You have to ease in to it, otherwise it will never work.

Haha, I agree on the insane part. I did it for two weeks a while back, so I thought I could just do it again... But I can't :D I do walk every day, but walking doesn't seem to do it for me... I do have a program now, that a friend of mine did for me, so I plan to stick to it :)
DeleteI've always wanted to run so every time I start a programme I'd go out every single day to fast forward myself through it - I'd end up hating it and eventually got shin splints when I was doing well enough. Now I've given myself a target of 3 x 50 minute runs a week - its baby steps but now I know there's isn't an end goal and its for life its far easier to keep up with :) Hope this helps! And I had a very skinny friend at school who really struggled to gain weight, it was awful watching her so low about it so I'm so happy you've managed to gain yourself :) x
ReplyDeleteViva Epernay
Wow... I absolutely hate running :D I don't think I could run for 10 minutes, let alone 50... So I don't think those are baby steps... You go, girl! :D Thank you so much for your kind words :) xx
DeleteLoved reading this, thanks for sharing! I think your blog is lovely, let me know if you would like to follow each other!

Thank you :)
DeleteI have always been average weight and I am thinner now than I was during my teenage years and I'm a mum of two. No, I don't do diets and I eat lots of junks but I think some people are just meant to be that way. I'm with you on the lack of motivation, I used to do yoga 6 days a week and now, I'm lucky to do it twice a week. LOL!
ReplyDeleteShireen | Reflection of Sanity
That's still better than nothing :) I can eat anything, just like you... or at least I could :D I guess that's genetics :)
DeleteHey darling, I've always been struggling with my weight also, and have been all shapes and sizes. I weighed as little as 50kg and as much as 85kg... My eating habits have been all over the place, and I know what you mean about struggling to find the motivation to work out. I TRY to work out at least twice a week, but it's too easy for me to split up. And once you slip up, it's easy to do it again and not bother at all! I'm no expert when it comes to motivation etc., but once quote really helped me through when I was on my diet and lost about 25kg in just a few months... 'Don't rely on motivation for anything. It's fleeting and unreliable. Discipline, however, is unyielding. Force yourself to follow through'. I think that's the key, really. It takes a lot of self-discipline to follow through your workout routines, but you just gotta force yourself to do it, difficult as that may sound, I think it's the only way, really. Good luck with yours, and thank you for this honest and personal post! Feels like we got to know you a little better. <3

Aww, you are the nicest, really :) I am so happy for you and the fact that you've lost so much weight in such short time... I think that seeing results is the best motivation you can get... I know I have to push myself, and I am determined to do so :) xx
DeleteSince Christmas I've whacked on weight and I really need to do something about it. Finding the motivation can be a little tricky sometimes.
ReplyDeleteTiffany Tales – A British Beauty & Lifestyle Blog
I agree :) Good luck with finding yours :)
DeleteBeing consistent is hard indeed! I am motivated when I see results to be honest!
ReplyDeleteDora www.BangsBang.com
Seeing results is amazing, but it takes quite a while before you can see the first ones... that's the hardest part for me, to be honest..
DeleteFirstly, well done with putting the weight on that's absolutely amazing ! It can be hard to exercise consistently but the trick is to not over do it, go gym for half hour and then leave and be strict with that , then in a week or two after doing that , then go for 45 minutes, other wise you wear yourself out and wont want to go again. Another thing is to make it an enjoyable experience by listening to music at the same time :) If you really struggle with commitment then sign up for a class and get a friend to go with you but make sure you enjoy the class or you wont go :)

Thank you so much for both your kind words and your advice :) it really means a lot... I took notes :D
DeleteI am skinny too and to be honest i am far less motivated then you and instead giving you any advise i found some for me. Very nice post.
ReplyDeleteGlamupGirls
Haha that's fine :D I knew there were more people like me out there :D
DeleteHey, I struggled with my weight too but on the other side. I was kinda skinny as a child but I ate a lot more junk food at 7 and started gaining weight. I’ve always yo-yoed weight wise, especially since I started taking prednisone on and off for my lupus, with weight gain being a side effect. I find that I have been losing as I’m tapering. The funny thing though is that my parents are genetically skinny: it’s just that they grew up in the Philippines so the food wasn’t as processed as it is today, and they weren’t siting on their butts: my dad was a serious basketball player and almost made it to a professional team and my mom walked and took public transportation everywhere and didn’t drive until she gave birth to me. The standard American diet really does make you fat, especially with the humongous portions we have.
ReplyDeleteIf you’re trying to gain weight, I would really recommend lifting heavy weights, not doing as much cardio, and increasing protein and fat. A lot of girls worry about looking bulky from lifting, and it won’t depending on how you go about it. We don’t have as much testosterone as men, so it will be hard, but I understand how some women are predisposed to getting larger/thicker from lifting heavier (myself included, but I use an 80’s workout video that uses heavy weights with cardio intervals to lean me out and shed the fat). But for you, I would say that the weights + protein will be in your favor for weight gain in the form of muscle.
Like Kay said, it is very very hard to motivate yourself, especially when you don’t “feel” like working out. I have moments all the time where I absolutely don’t want to do it, and in the middle of a workout I’m wondering what I got myself into. But after I do it, I feel amazing and my energy skyrockets. Think of the high you feel after you work out. You feel like you can take on the world too.
I enjoy your blog and it’s really nice meeting you!

I am actually from Croatia, where my grandma is able to have her own garden, so we have our own fruit and vegetable, as well as fresh meat, so I actually don't live on American diet. I guess that's very fortunate... As far as weight lifting, I don't think I would be able to do that, since I have scoliosis (a mild one, though), and I don't like to put a lot of wight on my back... I think something more relaxed will work better for me... I am happy that you've found your vent, and what suits you best, though... I am not looking for muscle forming, in that sense at least... I want to burn some extra fat and make everything nice and tight, if you know what I mean :D
DeleteSounds great. You know what i really wants to loose my wait beacause i'm not skinny.what you have shared your ideas in this post could be great for anyone wanting to loose wait.Great post.
ReplyDeleteThank you :) Happy to help x
